General Research Area Abstract:
Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is practiced in at least 70 countries globally. It is a complex global development issue, often resulting in difficult social circumstances and environmental destruction. ASGM is the largest demand sector for mercury globally, and there is increased global attention on the issue because of the current negotiation of a global mercury treaty. This research will investigate the legal status of ASGM globally, including the legal status of mercury use.

i) Global database of the legal status of ASGM in countries where it is practiced.
ii) Analysis report on the effectiveness of national policies.

i) Legal analysis skills
ii) Research experience on sustainable development issues in developing countries
iii) Experience in working with informal sectors of the economy, background with artisanal and small scale mining sector an asset
