Aleksey Gunya's research focuses on the sustainable development of mountain areas, which encompasses the estimation of regional trends, risk factors, informal and formal institutions of land and resources use, analyses of the regional and local development strategies. His main expertise is on the Caucasus and conducted comparative work with the Alps and Central Asia.
